Pickleball Scoring: Why Can’t It Just Be Normal?

Let’s be real. The first time someone explains pickleball scoring, your brain probably says, “Nope.” Between the odd number system, serving rules, and the random shouting of scores, it feels like pickleball was invented during someone’s mid-life crisis.

But hey, it’s not as complicated as it sounds. We’re breaking it down Outta Office Club style—straightforward, sarcastic, and with no math quizzes.

The Basics: Scoring in Pickleball Is... Different

Unlike tennis (where scores sound like a dessert menu), pickleball uses a simple point system. First to 11 wins. But—and this is a big BUT—you have to win by at least 2 points.

Here’s the kicker: only the serving team can score points. If you’re not serving, congrats, you’re just running cardio drills.

Calling the Score: Not a Bingo Game

When you’re about to serve, you announce the score using this format: Your Score – Opponent’s Score – Server Number. For example: “4-3-1.” Translation: Your team has 4 points, your opponents have 3, and you’re the first server on your team.

Still confused? Don’t worry. Just shout numbers confidently, and 90% of players will go with it.

Singles Scoring: Because You’re Doing All the Work

In singles, you only call two numbers: Your Score – Opponent’s Score. That’s it. No server number. It’s just you, the ball, and a questionable amount of energy drinks.

When Do You Score Points?

Here’s the golden rule: You can only score points on your serve. If you’re serving and win the rally, congrats! Add a point. If you’re serving and lose the rally, hand the ball (and your hopes) to the other team.

Winning: It’s Not Over at 11

First team to 11 points wins—BUT you have to win by at least 2 points. So, if it’s 10-10, you keep playing until one team gets a 2-point lead. This is where endurance comes into play. And by endurance, we mean pretending you’re not dying inside while trying to outlast your opponent.

Scoring Cheat Sheet: Simplified for Real Life

  • Doubles Format: Call the score as Your Score – Opponent’s Score – Server Number
  • Singles Format: Call the score as Your Score – Opponent’s Score
  • Only the serving team can score points.
  • First to 11 wins, but you must win by 2 points.

Final Thoughts: Why Does This Even Matter?

Look, scoring in pickleball isn’t rocket science, but it’s also not exactly intuitive. The good news? After a few games, you’ll pick it up faster than your opponent can react to your spin shot (assuming you’re using one of our paddles, of course). And if you’re still struggling? Don’t sweat it. Pickleball’s all about having fun, staying outta the office, and making your friends question their athletic ability.
